The Songs of Anand Bakshi since the Begining of his Career( 1956 -1965)

 

Anand Bakshi (21 July 1930-30 March 2002) was fond of writing poetry since his youth, but he did this mostly as a private hobby. He worked in Army but left it to join Hindi Film Industry as a writer or a singer but not a lyricist. He got his break writing songs in a film titled Bhalaa Aadmi (1958), acted by Bhagwan Dada. He wrote four songs in this film. His first song in this film was "Dharti Ke Laal Na Kar Itna Malaal" which was recorded on 9 Nov 1956. (In his own voice on All India Radio interview).

Anand Bakshi thought at that time that now his career has started but it was not like that, he had to struggle further. He was given one or two songs in the films like Miss Toofan Mail, Sun To Le Haseena(1958), CID Girl, Laal Nishaan(1959) but he got noticed from the 1962 film 'Kala Samundar' Qawwali  “Meri Taveer Le Ke Kya Karoge”. Plus the films ‘Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath’ His first super hit song was 'Mere Mehboob Kayamat Hogi' from Mr X in Bombay, the first time he worked with Laxmikant Pyarelal.

In 1963, he again noticed with  Mukesh solo – “Chaand Aaahen Bharega” from the film ‘Phool Baney Angaare’,  “Tumhen Husn De Ke Khuda Ne Sitamgar Banaaya Banaaya”. from the film – ‘Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai’,

His real career as a lyricist started from the movie 'Jab Jab Phul Khile'. One of those songs 'Ek tha gul ek thi bulbul..' became very popular.This year another film 'Himalaya Ki God Mein' had 4 super hit songs in his name. Apart from these two films  ‘Lutera’, ‘Shriman Funtoosh’ and ‘Teesra Kaun’ had memorable songs. Notable mentions required though, for “Hamen Kya Jo Har Su Ujaale Huye Hain” from ‘Namaste Ji’ and “Ye Dard Bhara Afsaana” from ‘Shriman Funtoosh’. And yes – “Pyaar Ka Fasaana Bana Le Dil Deewaana” from ‘Teesra Kaun’.

The Story Behind the Song "Dum Maro Dum"

This super hit song was once an anthem of the Indian young generation. To hear ‘Dum Maro Dum’ blaring over loudspeakers was a part of growing up in the 1970s. The job of composing music for ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ was first offered to Sachin Dev Burman but he hated hippie culture and turned down the offer. But his son R. D. Burman was of a different opinion and decide to grab this opportunity. After this song, R. D. Burman became the new mega-composer of Bollywood.
Actually ‘Dum Maro Dum’ was supposed to be a duet between Usha Uthup (singing for the bad girl) and Lata Mangeshkar (singing for the good girl). But at the end, they were both checked off the list and Asha Bhosle ended up singing the song solo.
The song topped the Binaca Geetmala annual list 1972. In Binaca Geetmala, a song could appear for a maximum of 18 weeks, after which it was called a Sartaj Geet. On 15 March 1972, Dum Maro Dum became a Sartaj Geet while it was at #1 payddan (position). It had remained at #1 position for 12 weeks.
Dev Anand wanted some peppy music before his song "Ram Ka Naam Badnam Na Karo" R D Burman sat with Anand Bakshi and asked him to give him few words before starting the song Ram Ka Naam Badnam No Karo. It was Anand Bakshi who used the old phrase Dum Maro Dum Mit Jaye Gum as Mukhda for this song, R D Burman immediately made a tune which was liked by all his musicians. So he asked Anand Bakshi to complete the full song on this tune.

The song came out to be marvellous, everybody was convinced that it will become a craze. In fact, Dev Anand was scared of this song, he was worried that this song will overshadow his song Ram Ka Naam Badnam Na Karo. RDB suggested to him that they will keep this song only on the disc. After a few days, Dev Saab decided to picturise this song on Zeenat Aman but kept a small version of this separately in the film.
The song presented the lyricist Anand Bakshi as a versatile lyricist and shaped his career. It also boosted the composer Rahul Dev Burman's career. Bhupinder played the guitar for the song. Charanjit Singh played the distinctive drone of the transichord that opens the song.
This song has been remixed and sampled by a number of artists. It has also been included in many compilations.British DJ, San-j Sanj has used the infectious guitar hook and created a dance track featuring Natty A called "So Real So Right". DJ Ritu and Bally Sagoo compiled the song for their collection The Rough Guide to Bollywood in 2002. In 2004, the hip-hop artist Method Man sampled the song in his third album Tical 0: The Prequel, for the track "What's Happenin'" featuring Busta Rhymes.

He got his break writing songs in a Brij Mohan's film titled, "Bhalaa Aadmi", 1958, acted by Bhagwan Dada. He wrote 4 songs in this film. His first song in this film was "Dharti Ke Laal Na Kar Itna Malaal" which was recorded on 9 Nov 1956. In his own voice.

Anand Bakshi - The Juggler of Words

Over 3500 songs in  638 films in his career over five decades, he was the most vibrant lyricist that the industry has witnessed. The beauty of Bakshi’s mesmerising lyrics was that it retained its currency till he lived in the first decade of the new millennium.He was a master wordsmith.His contribution to the rhythmic songs of the golden era of Hindi cinema, which began in the 1950s and lasted till the mid-1970s will be noticed among the dozen odd top lyricists.
He 6.was born in Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan, on 21 July 1930 He  was fond of writing poetry since his youth, but he did this mostly as a private hobby. He worked in the Army for many years and simultaneously tried to market his songs in the Mumbai film world.Took voluntary discharge from the Army, E.M.E.  on 27-8-1956, at Lucknow.Arrived in Bombay to find work in films as a singer and or lyricist in Oct. 1956.
He got his break writing songs in a Brij Mohan film titled Bhalaa Aadmi (1958), acted by Bhagwan Dada. He wrote four songs in this film. Sahir Ludhianvi taught him how to weave poetry into lyrics. He even introduced him to producers. Once he even asked Yashji (Chopra) to try him as a lyricist. But he wrote for Yashji’s Chandni (1989) only after Sahir saab passed away. 
He was associated with music composers such as Laxmikant-Pyarelal, R D Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, SD Burman, Anu Malik, Rajesh Roshan and Anand-Milind, and his songs have been sung by all the top singers as well as other singers such as Shamshad Begum, Ila Arun, Khursheed Bawra, Amirbai Karnataki, Sudha Malhotra and more. He is known to have worked with more than one generation of music composers.He wrote the first recorded songs of many first time male and female leads who went on to become stars, and also of singers such as Shailendra Singh, Kumar Sanu, Kavita Krishnamurthy etc
His jodi with Laxmikant Pyarelal was very popular They worked together in more than 220 films.First time he was associated with L P was in 1964 film Mr X In Bombay,the song Mere Mehboob Qyamat Hogi sung by Kishore kumar became very popular.The next film worked together was Lootera in 1965.

After  L P,the other composer was R D Burman with whom he did maximum films.Their first film was Teesra Kaun in 1965.
Anand Bakshi wrote for five decades, watching the windmill of time roll over and over. New actors replaced old ones, his close buddies like Kishore Kumar, Pancham and Laxmikant left for the heavens even as he watched helplessly. But Anand Bakshi’s gallery of fame kept gathering up successes like Hum, Darr, Lamhe, Mohra, DDLJ and Dil to Pagal Hai, as he kept adjusting his stance with the changing time.He stayed young and kept his screen heroes and heroines even younger. 
Late in his life, he suffered from heart and lung disease as a consequence of lifelong smoking. In March 2002, he caught a bacterial infection at Nanavati hospital during a minor heart surgery. He finally died of multiple organ failure on 30 March 2002, 8:00 PM at Mumbai's Nanavati Hospital, at the age of 72. The last released movie with lyrics by Anand Bakshi (after his death) was Mehbooba.

Anand Bakshi-The Lyricist who understood the pulse of Cinema lovers

Anand Bakshi was one of the most prominent and successful lyricists of Bollywood.He was not as great poet as Nirala, Sumitranandan Pant or Sahir.He plucked words from the common man's dictionary.His words were simple.He believed that simplicity is the key to reach to.the common man. He would dive into philosophy in the ‘antara’ only after he was sure he had connected with the audience in the ‘mukhra’.

 Anand Bakshi (Bakhshi Anand Prakash Vaid) was born in Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan, on 21 July 1930.He came to Bombay to make a name for himself in writing and singing, but ended up becoming more successful in writing lyrics. After writing for a few movies from 1956 onwards, he first found success in 1962 with Mehendi Lagi Mere Haath, which was produced by (LimeLight), Music Kalyanji & Anandji, Music Pub-HMV/Saregama. Bakshi later made another mark for himself writing a quawwali for the 1962 film Kala Samundar, the song was "Meri Tasveer Lekar Kya Karoge Tm". He got his real big breakthroughs in 1965 with Himalay Ki God Mein, and a huge breakthrough again in 1965 with the super-hit film Jab Jab Phool Khile, starring Shashi Kapoor; and yet again in 1967 with the super-hit movie Milan(starring Sunil Dutt). These six hit films within a decade of his entry into films cemented his status as a lyrics writer of immense caliber.

He wrote more than 3500 songs in Hindi and Punjabi films.He worked with almost all the Music Directors of his time He wrote for more than 500 films out of which he worked with Laxmikant Pyarelal in 300 films and R D Burman in 100 films. However it was only with the blockbuster Milan (1967) that he was recognized as a lyricist par excellence, with tunes from the film being hummed all over the country.

His career kept at an all-time high until 30 March 2002, when he passed away in Bombay. He had been quite ill for a few months and had been undergoing treatment for cardiac-related problems. His death was a tragic loss to Bollywood Cinema,

He holds a record of 41 nominations for Best Lyricist in Filmfare Awards but won only three.He holds the record of getting nominated for consecutively 13 years from 1970 till 1982, resulting in 23 nominations

A Musical Tribute To ANAND BAKSHI on his 15th Death Anniversary

Anand Bakshi (born on 21st July 1920-Died on 30th March 2002) was a Lyricist of Bollywood Films.Anand Bakshi penned some of the most memorable songs that has ever been produced by the Hindi film industry.With over 600 films to his credit and having worked with the best Music Directors in the Hindi film industry,He made a hit Jodi with Lakshmikant Pyarelal and later with R D Burman,in this Blog I am discussing his association with R D Burman.

Anand Bakshi and R D Burman worked jointly in 84 films.The first time they worked jointly in 1965 film Teesra Kaun starring Feroz Khan and Kalpna .The song "Pyar Ka Fasana Bana Le Dil Deewana" sung by Lata and Mukesh became popular.But both of them clicked together with Kati Patang(1970) starring Rajesh Khanna and Asha Parekh.All the songs written by him were instant hit.After that came Hare Rama Hare Krishna(1971) and the song Dum Maro Dum became the song of the year.This year was very good for both,6 films were released that year,Amar Prem(1971) with the song Chingari Koi Bhadke became very popular.
In 1972, 4 films of them released,songs of Jawani Deewani,Seeta Aur Geeta and Apna Desh were highlight of that year.

After Hare Rama Hare Krishna Dev Anand kept both in his forthcoming films.In fact the combination of kishore Kumar R D Burman and Anand Bakshi became a deadly Combination,this combination created many immortal Songs.

Though Anand Bakshi was writing songs for many Music Directors since 1956  but he had to wait till 1969 for an opportunity to work with SD Burman. It is well known that RD Burman played an important role in the music of Aradhana (1969) After that he went on to work with SD Burman in many other films including Anurag (1972), Jugnu (1973), Prem Nagar (1974) and Chupke Chupke (1975),
